After restoration, the panorama was exhibited five four months on the occasion of the Swiss National Exhibition 2002 (Expo.02).
The Foundation for the Panorama of the Battle of Murten was established in 1996, in view of the national exhibition, in order to submit the panorama as a project. Conservation and logistical problems were therefore to be expected.
The emergency conservation work (1996-8) led to a restoration campaign (1998-2002) and to the preparation of its public exhibition as part of Expo.02 (National Exhibition). The panorama was shown to the public for four months in a pavilion built by Jean Nouvelle on Lake Murten. The 3 rolls of the panorama were then deposited in a depot that was not accessible to the public.
With a view to the Swiss National Exhibition, the Foundation submitted a dossier to the Expo management prepared by Volker Schaible and Heinz Schwarz for the presentation of the (restored) panorama. Architect Jean Nouvel took up the idea and displayed the panorama on the upper floor of his ‘monolith’, which was placed in Lake Murten. The Swiss Trade Association (SGV) supported the project at all levels.
In March 2002, the panorama picture was transported to the ‘Monolith’ and hung up. For reasons of time and cost, the faux terrain was dispensed with and a screen was installed in its place. Expo.02 opened on 15 May. The ‘Monolith’ - and with it the battle panorama - is said to have been the most visited installation at Expo.02. Since then, the panorama has been stored rolled up in an army park. The solution for the desired permanent exhibition of the panorama has not yet been found.
The project ‘Digitisation and enlargement of the panorama of the Battle of Murten’ (EPFL 2022-2026) provides for a series of exhibitions in Swiss museums and abroad to be held between 2024 and 2026 to commemorate the 550th anniversary of the Burgundian Wars (1476-2026).
